In the Las Palmas neighbourhood of Palm Springs, the mid-century modernism style was explored and celebrated by the Alexander Construction Company.
Between 1947 and 1965, father George and son Robert, built over 2000 houses in a style that is now quintessential to the city and modernist architecture:
With a repetition of pattern that was always adhered – garage, breezeway, entrance, house – the Alexander Construction Company worked with architects Palmer & Krisel and went from starter homes of 1200 square feet to over 2000 square feet for the wealthy clientele.
Some of the famous Alexander / Palmer & Krisel creations included houses for Peter Lawford, Dinah Shore, Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin. Wandering around Palm Springs, the style stands out, its simplicity and boldness still a welcome style for the 21st century.
